Lot Story: Zhang Gongyi – Nine Generations Living Together

During the Tang Dynasty, Zhang Gongyi was known for his filial piety and kindness. His family had nine generations—hundreds of people—living under one roof in harmony without fighting.

The emperor was amazed and asked how such a large family could live so peacefully. Zhang Gongyi simply wrote more than one hundred “忍” characters, showing that family harmony comes from tolerance, forgiveness and giving way to one another.

“忍” in this story does not mean simply enduring. It means tolerance, letting go, and loving others despite their imperfections.

It also means knowing when to step back, stop nagging, hold your tongue and let children learn through experience. Children learn by making their own decisions, making mistakes, experiencing the consequences, reflecting on what went wrong, and correcting themselves. Through these experiences, they develop people skills, virtue, responsibility and good judgment.

Parents should guide and support them, but not always rescue them from every mistake. Giving children room to learn helps them grow into responsible, independent and trustworthy adults.

Family members may disagree—agree to disagree respectfully, remain supportive, and cultivate virtue together.

The emperor praised the Zhang family for their filial piety and tolerance, allowing nine generations to live together in harmony and enjoy lasting blessings.

• Do good even when no one sees. When you walk into temples, you reveal your soul.

• Speak up for justice while keeping yourself safe—example, you can be an anonymous whistleblower. If you see criminal, or unethical behavior at work and want to live in a better, safer world, you must play your part. It is a collective effort—silence enables injustice. Be brave, protect and help the poor, sick and vulnerable (include animals). 

Do you know? In ancient times, people who were known for their virtue, selflessness, & for helping many lives become immortals. Even after they become Celestial deities, Bodhisattvas, or Buddhas, they continue to help people, animals, spirits, and all beings. So why aren’t you doing it now?

Be a Selfless Leader, Parent, Influencer & Role Model

👉 Be selfless and wise. Create and promote systems and policies that serve the greater good—creating goodness and blessings for yourself and others.

👉 Benefit others. Uplift employees, customers and the wider community. Help people live well, rather than encouraging an endless pursuit of materialism.

👉 Teach children compassion, helpfulness, love and inclusiveness. Helpful, virtuous adults make better leaders and create a better life for everyone (imagine shorter hours of work, better wage because the leaders are selfless and willing to share wealth with everyone else).

👉 Protect the environment and care for the poor, sick and vulnerable—including animals. Please teach children to be kind and compassionate towards animals.

👉 Leave goodness behind. Think beyond yourself and for future generations.

"Last year, things were generally smooth and suitable."
Last year went well. You experienced success, peace, or good fortune.

Line 2-若較今年時運衰
"Compared to this year, your fortune is going downhill."
This year, your luck has turned. Things are not working out as they did before. Obstacles, delays, or losses may appear. 

Line 3-好把瓣香告神佛
"It is best to offer incense and pray to the deities and Buddhas."
Do not rely on your own strength or past success. Turn to sincere prayer, humility, and self-reflection.

Line 4-莫教福謝悔無追
"Do not let your blessings fade away and only regret later – by then, it cannot be reversed." "Make the most of your remaining blessings now, cherish the present: Recognize and be grateful for the good things you have now (health, family, opportunities) before they are gone.Also make an effort to cultivate virtue and do good (see last segment). 🌿 Historical Example: Zhang Han Remembers the Sea Bass

A man of the Jin dynasty, Zhang Han, was serving as an official in Luoyang. When the autumn winds began to blow, he felt a deep longing for his hometown dishes—water-shield soup and sliced sea bass. It prompted him to realise that peace and simplicity are worth far more than money and fame, so he resigned and returned home. It turned out to be the right decision. Not long after, political turmoil broke out, and the Prince of Qi was defeated. Because Zhang Han had left early, he avoided the disaster.

🌿You experience three constraints and cannot act freely. Your household appears desolate and quiet, as cold as autumn. When the time of the Rat and Ox arrives in succession, all things return to spring - no need to worry🌿

This lot is moderately-auspicious. It describes a period of struggle, uncertainty, and loneliness. You feel trapped—unable to move forward, yet unable to stand still. Your circumstances may seem bleak, like an empty house in autumn. And here is the hope. Good News! This is temporary. A turning point is coming. When the Ox and Rat meet (meaning a transition point in time), everything will change. Good fortune will come again. Congrats!

Lot Story: Lu Mengzheng Endures Hardship

This story tells the experience of Lu Mengzheng, a famous minister of the Song Dynasty.

He was born into poverty. Before he rose to prominence, his life was extremely difficult. Often he had no food or clothing, and sometimes he was even forced to beg for a meal. During that time, others looked down on him, and his future seemed completely hopeless.

Yet Lu Mengzheng did not abandon himself to despair. He accepted his poverty with peace, continued to study diligently, cultivated his character, and never changed his resolve. He believed that endurance 忍耐 and preparation of today are precisely for the blossoming of tomorrow.

When he later rose to become Prime Minister, this empathy guided his actions. He became a selfless leader who cared for the people, not for his own glory. He spoke truth to power – once reminding the Emperor that while the capital celebrated, people outside the city were dying of cold and hunger. He recommended capable men for government positions even when those men had personally offended him, because he believed talent should serve the country, not personal grudges. He rejected corruption and lived simply, even as a high official.

His poverty taught him compassion. His compassion made him a great leader.

In the end, he rose to the position of Prime Minister and became a respected minister – not just because of his talent, but because of his virtue, empathy, and selflessness.

Historical example : Lin Xiangru Returns the Jade Intact
This story tells of the legendary experience of Lin Xiangru, an envoy of the State of Zhao during the Warring States period, when the powerful State of Qin falsely promised to exchange fifteen cities for Zhao’s priceless treasure, the He Shi Bi jade, and Lin Xiangru was entrusted with the mission of escorting the jade to Qin; however, the King of Qin had no real intention of honoring the agreement.

Seeing through the deception, Lin Xiangru boldly threatened that he would rather destroy the jade and sacrifice himself than allow it to fall into Qin’s hands, forcing the King of Qin to temporarily restrain his greed, and soon after, he secretly arranged for the jade to be safely returned to Zhao, while he alone remained behind to face the king’s anger, ultimately relying on his intelligence, courage, and composure to escape unharmed.

🌿 Lesson from the Story: Lin Xiangru’s success came from his clarity in seeing the truth, his decisiveness in not clinging to false promises, and his courage to act immediately when the situation required it, as he was not deceived by outward appearances, nor intimidated by power, but instead firmly protected what truly mattered—his country’s honor and his own integrity.

When trust is broken, don't act out of anger—see clearly, protect yourself, and make the wise decision of exiting and letting it go afterwards.”

年來耕稼苦無收。
"For years, farming has been bitter, with no harvest."
— In past years, the hard labor of tilling and planting brought nothing but hardship, because the crops failed and there was no harvest at all.

今歲田疇定有秋。
"This year, the fields are sure to have an autumn harvest."
— This year, however, the fields are certain to yield a good autumn harvest. ("秋" here refers to the autumn harvest, the season when crops are gathered.)

況遇太平無事日。
"Moreover, we have met with days of peace and no troubles."
— What's more, we are now living in peaceful times, free from war, disorder, or disturbance.

今岁田畴定有秋。
「今年田地必定有秋收。」— 今年情况将有所改变，田地必定会迎来丰收。「秋」在这里指的是秋收，也就是收获成果的季节。

即使无人看见，也要行善。当你走进寺庙时，你便展露了你的灵魂。

你知道吗？在古代，那些因德行高尚、无私忘我、救助众生而闻名的人，最终成就了不朽。即使在他们成为天神、菩萨或佛陀之后，他们依然在帮助人类、动物、亡灵和一切众生。那么，你为什么还不行动起来呢？

👉 无私且有智慧。 制定和推动有益于大众的制度与政策，为自己和他人积累善意与福报。

1. 签诗:    望渠消息向長安。常把菱花仔細看。見說文書將入境。今朝喜色上眉端。

The Poem

🌿  Gazing toward Chang'an for his message,

Ever I take the water-chestnut mirror and look carefully.

I hear it said the letter is about to enter the border—

This morning, joy has risen to the tips of my brows.🌿

望渠消息向長安。
Wàng qú xiāo xī xiàng Cháng'ān.
"I look toward Chang'an for news of him."
— The speaker is anxiously awaiting word from someone, looking in the direction of Chang'an (the capital, symbolizing the seat of power, authority, or the place where important matters are decided). "渠" (qú) is a classical pronoun meaning "him/her/that person." The whole line conveys longing and hopeful expectation of news.

常把菱花仔細看。
Cháng bǎ líng huā zǐ xì kàn.
"I constantly take up the water-chestnut flower mirror and look at it carefully."
— "菱花" (líng huā) literally means "water-chestnut flower," but it is a classical poetic term for a mirror (ancient bronze mirrors were often decorated with water-chestnut flower patterns, or the hexagonal shape resembled the flower). The speaker keeps gazing into the mirror—perhaps checking their appearance, waiting anxiously, or looking for a sign. It suggests restless anticipation and self-examination while waiting.

見說文書將入境。
Jiàn shuō wén shū jiāng rù jìng.
"I have heard it said that the document/letter is about to enter the border."
— "見說" (jiàn shuō) means "I hear it said" or "it is reported." "文書" (wén shū) means an official document, letter, or dispatch. "將入境" (jiāng rù jìng) means "is about to cross into the territory/border." Good news is on its way—the long-awaited message or official notice is finally approaching.

今朝喜色上眉端。
Jīn zhāo xǐ sè shàng méi duān.
"This morning, joy appears on the tips of my eyebrows."
— "今朝" (jīn zhāo) = this morning; now. "喜色" (xǐ sè) = a joyful expression; the look of happiness. "上眉端" (shàng méi duān) = rises to the ends of the eyebrows. In Chinese idiom, happiness is shown in the eyebrows (眉开眼笑, "eyebrows opening, eyes smiling"). The line means: this morning, joy is written all over my face—the good news has arrived or is confirmed, and the speaker is beaming with delight.

Overall Meaning

This is an auspicious fortune poem (签诗) predicting good news after a period of anxious waiting. 🌿 Story Behind the Lot: Zhang Jingzhao Drawing Eyebrows
This story comes from the Han dynasty and tells of Zhang Chang (Governor of Jingzhao), who would often draw his wife’s eyebrows at home with great care and affection, but someone, out of gossip or ill intent, reported this to the Emperor and questioned his conduct; when Zhang Chang was summoned and asked about it, he responded with wisdom and tact, saying, “Within the private space of husband and wife, there are many intimate and joyful things—drawing eyebrows is nothing unusual,” and through his calm and thoughtful reply, he clarified the situation well, and the Emperor, recognizing both his talent and sincerity, chose not to punish him. 

🌿 Moral of the Story: High Emotional Intelligence & The Art of Expressing Yourself

The story of Zhang Chang teaches us that how you respond can be just as important as what you do. When faced with gossip, criticism, or an awkward situation, he did not become defensive, angry, or confrontational. Instead, he controlled his emotions, able to respond calmly, cleverly, and with good judgment.

His answer showed high EQ (emotional intelligence)—he understood the situation, recognized how his actions could be perceived, and chose his words carefully to explain himself without creating further conflict.

If he had simply stayed silent, the misunderstanding could have continued and potentially harmed his reputation and even family.

This story reminds you to learn communication skills, EQ, graciousness, and wisdom—to be proactive, knowing it is important to speak up to help ourselves, handle criticism with grace, forgive others, and express ourselves cleverly and appropriately.
